Innovative Solutions for Pressure Sores Prevention

Skin injuries caused by prolonged pressure often occur in people who are unable to change their position independently – such as sick newborns in hospitals or elderly people. Thanks to successful partnerships with industry and research, Empa scientists are now launching two smart solutions for pressure sores.

Empa scientists have developed two smart solutions for pressure sores caused by prolonged pressure on the skin, which is common in populations such as newborns in hospitals and the elderly. These injuries can result in wounds, infections, and pain, leading to healthcare costs of around 300 million Swiss francs annually.

One project focuses on creating a pressure-equalizing mattress for newborns in intensive care units, while another project involves a sensor system for adults at risk of pressure ulcers. The mattress uses pressure sensors and a microprocessor to fill chambers via an electronic pump to minimize pressure on vulnerable areas of the body.

A sensor system made of smart textiles can provide early warning of tissue damage in adults by measuring oxygen levels in the skin and alerting patients or nursing staff. The research projects have potential applications in wearable sensor technology and smart clothing, with the goal of preventing tissue damage and improving patient care.

The projects received funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation and Innosuisse, highlighting the collaboration between experts in materials, optics, electronics, medicine, and technology. This research was made possible through private third-party funding from the Empa Zukunftsfonds, which supports innovative projects and helps young talents start their scientific careers..
