Swiss Government Sets 2025 Deadline for RUAG International Privatization

During its meeting on 29 November 2023, the Federal Council approved the strategic objectives for RUAG International Holding AG for 2024 to 2027. Whereas the previous strategy period centred on the split of the RUAG group, the next few years will focus on the completion of the privatisation and, in particular, the sale of Beyond Gravity (space division) by the end of 2025.

The Confederation owns RUAG International Holding AG. The Federal Council manages the company and sets strategic objectives every four years.

The Board is responsible for achieving these objectives and the Federal Council conducts annual audits. In 2019, the Federal Council decided to fully privatize RUAG International due to the lack of a legal basis and public interest in a government-owned technology company.

The strategic period focused on splitting the RUAG group, which was completed in 2022, and starting the privatization process. The privatization process is well underway with multiple business areas already divested.

By the end of 2025, the last remaining business area, the space division Beyond Gravity, is expected to be sold. After that, the company will be wound up.

The new strategic objectives for 2024 to 2027 include completing the sale of Beyond Gravity by the end of 2025, no further acquisitions until then, a purchaser from the Western world, and considering Switzerland's locational, security, and space policy interests. RUAG International should also report profits similar to comparable companies.

The proceeds from the divestment process will be gradually paid to the Confederation as dividends. Philipp Rohr, Communications at the Federal Finance Administration, can be contacted for more information..
