The Swiss Air Force and U.S. Air Force will hold a joint training exercise in Swiss airspace from 18-21 September 2023.

This training is part of Switzerland's effort to enhance its defense capabilities through international cooperation. Multiple training modules will be conducted during this period.

Swiss Air Force Squadrons 17 and 18, as well as the U.S. Air Force's 510th Fighter Squadron, will participate in the exercise.

The Swiss squadrons will take off from Payerne Air Base in Switzerland, while the U.S. squadron will depart from Aviano Air Base in Italy.

The purpose of this exercise is to test the planning, execution, and debriefing of air defense exercises, and to share experiences. The training is based on a bilateral agreement on military training, education, and exercises signed in April 2020.

Two Swiss F/A-18 fighter aircraft and two F-16 fighter aircraft from the U.S. Air Force will be involved in the exercise.

This joint training exercise builds upon a longstanding history of cooperation between the Swiss Air Force and U.S. Air Force in terms of training and education.

It aligns with the Federal Council's intention to strengthen Switzerland's defense capabilities through international collaboration, as stated in the supplementary report to the September 2022 Security Policy Report..
