The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) has indicted a 45-year-old Romanian citizen for blowing open ATMs and stealing cash in excess of CHF 100,000 in December 2019 in Sevelen and Neftenbach. The indictment includes multiple charges such as misuse of explosives and toxic gases, aggravated theft, aggravated criminal damage, and unlawful entry.

The suspect used explosives to blow open an ATM in Sevelen on December 12, 2019, and stole CHF 126,600 in cash. The explosion caused serious damage to the ATM and the building, costing around CHF 100,000.

The OAG also alleges that the suspect blew open another ATM in Neftenbach on December 20, 2019, stealing CHF 103,200 in cash and causing serious property damage. The suspect had an accomplice in both cases.

The OAG conducted the proceedings, identified and arrested the suspect, and he has been serving a sentence since March 2023. The Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona is responsible for further enquiries, and the sentencing proposals will be made at the main hearing.

The OAG has jurisdiction over explosives offences involving attacks on ATMs, and they are currently investigating approximately 70 such cases. They have been successful in identifying perpetrators and securing convictions in some cases, despite the challenges of international investigations..
