Switzerland is sending three army helicopters and personnel to Greece to help fight wildfires. The fires are raging in the Alexandroupolis region and the Greek authorities have requested international aid.

Despite the efforts of other EU countries, the fires are still not contained. Switzerland has decided to join the international effort and will dispatch the helicopters and personnel on Sunday.

A team composed of Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit and Swiss Armed Forces specialists has already left for Greece to coordinate with the Greek authorities. Around 30 Swiss specialists will participate in the operation.

Swiss Humanitarian Aid, under the FDFA, is responsible for managing the operation. Switzerland had previously sent helicopters to aid with wildfires in Greece in 2021.

A press briefing will be held on Saturday for journalists interested in covering the departure of the helicopters..
