The Swiss Federal Council implemented further sanctions against Russia on August 3, following the EU's recent sanctions on gold and gold products. The new measures specifically target the buying, importing, and transporting of gold and gold products from Russia, with a ban also extending to services related to these goods.

These measures are a response to Russia's ongoing military aggression in Ukraine. Switzerland aims to address the global food and energy crisis but has clarified that the sanctions do not affect agricultural or food product trade between third countries and Russia.

Exceptions have been made concerning transactions related to agricultural products and oil supplies to third countries. The largest Russian bank, Sberbank, has had its assets frozen and is prohibited from providing funds, economic resources, or technical services.

54 individuals and 9 organizations and entities were added to the sanctions list by the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) on July 29. Switzerland's list of sanctioned persons and entities aligns with that of the EU.

The EU also made technical adjustments to existing measures, and the Federal Council has instructed the EAER to make corresponding amendments to an ordinance at a later date. Media enquiries can be directed to EAER Communications, while business enquiries regarding sanctions can be made to SECO..
